    • Recognizing regional excellence: 2010 award recipients

    This year at What’s Right with the Region, we presented Regional Excellence Awards to three organizations and one individual who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to creating a better Atlanta region. Though there were only four awards, there were 24 outstanding candidates for this recognition, and in the coming months, we will feature each one in our monthly e-magazine. This month, we begin with the four award recipients.

    aaaAtlanta Regional Commission Area Agency on Aging - The Area Agency on Aging hosted a nine-day Lifelong Communities Design Charrette, attended by 1,500 people, to explore what it takes to establish a community where people can live throughout their lifetime, regardless of age or ability. Participants considered factors including transportation, accessibility, housing, health and wellness. Today, six model sites are in varying stages of planning and implementation throughout the region.

    cpacsCenter for Pan Asian Community Services, Inc. - CPACS is the largest and oldest agency providing services to Asian Americans in the South. Now in its 29th year, the agency counteracts problems faced by immigrants, refugees and racial-ethnic minorities by creating and delivering culturally competent and comprehensive social and health services.

    Horace Sibley - For seven years, Horace Sibley has chaired the United Way Regional Commission on Homelessness.  Under his leadership, the Commission has made many significant inroads toward addressing homelessness in the Atlanta region, including creating the 24/7 Gateway Homeless Services Center, which serves 8,000-plus individuals annually, and the innovative Street to Home program, which moves homeless people from the streets directly into supportive housing.

    bansleyTrees Atlanta - As the metro area struggles with a need for more greenspace, Trees Atlanta has brought positive change by planting trees in new areas and replacing trees lost to age and storms. Founded 30 years ago by Marcia Bansley, Trees Atlanta is considered one of the premier trees organizations in the country.
