  • What’s Right with the Region? We are!

gates"You all are here at an important time," announced Chris Gates, speaking to 250 friends of The Civic League gathered for the organization’s annual What’s Right with the Region event on Feb. 25. As executive director of Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE) and former president of The National Civic League, Gates shared his take on the changing relationship between community and public policy, noting that society "has collectively abandoned the old model of decision-making but not decided what the new model will look like just yet." Organizations like The Civic League, he said, are an important testing ground for that new model, providing "safe space" for civil dialogue on the tough issues that can be both divisive and unifying, and empowering citizens to get involved in "democracy," in the true sense of the word.

Following Gates’speech, he joined Civic League chair Lesley Grady and Host Committee Chair (and DeKalb County CEO) Burrell Ellis in presenting The League’s annual Regional Excellence Awards to the Atlanta Regional Commission Area Agency on Aging, the Center for Pan Asian Community Services, Horace Sibley and Trees Atlanta. (For more on the award recipients, please refer to the article that follows.)

grp1The 2010 Founders’ Award was presented to James L. Rhoden, Jr., chairman of Futren Corporation, by his friend Bill Bolling, founder and executive director of the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The Founders’ Award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution of vision, leadership and action for positive change in the Atlanta region over a period of years. In his remarks, Bolling characterized Jim as a true believer in the critical need for a cohesive region who works quietly behind the scenes to push important business, cultural and civic initiatives on a regional level and at home in Cobb County.

grp2The Civic League is grateful to the following sponsors for their support of this event and throughout the year: The Coca-Cola Company, Cox Enterprises, Georgia Power, UPS, The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Georgia State University Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, Atlanta Regional Commission, Gifford Hillgass & Ingwersen and Futren Corporation. Also, very special thanks the Event Committee led by Ginny Rainey and our in-kind sponsors: Affairs to Remember Caterers, The Atlanta Opera, The Commerce Club, Jackson Spalding and Sarah Douglas Communications. What’s Right with the Region honorary co-chairs were Craig Lesser of The Pendleton Group and Charlie Yates of Zurich N.A.
