  • Recognizing regional excellence

Each year when The Civic League issues a call for nominations for its Regional Excellence Awards, the awards committee is overwhelmed by the responses, which honor so many organizations and individuals with an extraordinary commitment to creating a better Atlanta region. While we can't give an award to every nominee, we can tell you all about them in our monthly e-magazine.  This month, we’re pleased to feature four grassroots leaders with lasting impact.

Regina Brewer for her leadership in getting Inman Park - Atlanta’s first suburb - declared an Atlanta Historic District in 2002, saving the community from the "progress" that has decimated so many of the region’s architecturally-significant neighborhoods and corridors. Brewer serves on the Atlanta Urban Design Commission and works as the Preservation Planner for the City of Decatur.

Rashid Brown for utilizing his leadership development and corporate training skills to empower and equip youth and young adults in distressed communities to handle adversity and economic disparities. Through his partnerships with Cobb and DeKalb County schools and youth organizations like Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Brown is preparing at-risk young people with the skills they need to compete in a 21st century global workforce.

Sally Flocks for channeling her frustrations and near-misses as a pedestrian and cyclist into the creation of PEDS, a non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to making metro Atlanta safe and accessible for all pedestrians. Founded in 1996, PEDS focuses on making sidewalks safe and accessible to all, reducing speed limits in residential and urban districts, retrofitting state roads that lack sidewalks and creating safe crossings for multi-lane roads.

Brenda McLean for her community activism and commitment to innovative solutions through her service to such organizations as the Atlanta Homeless Commission, Cobb Neighborhood Safety Commission, Cobb Collaborative and Keep the Dream Alive Foundation.
